Educational Programs

The ASMS sponsors two annual educational meetings. Each has been recognized by the American Academy for Category I CME credit. The Proficiency Testing program and Clinical Observational Preceptorship program meet additional educational and quality assurance objectives.

13th Annual Clinical Symposium - Dermatologic Surgery: Focus on Skin Cancer

Symposium Description
Join us for a relaxing family weekend in the historic Williamsburg area. The Williamsburg Lodge has hosted numerous high-profile political and social events in their dignified, elegant surroundings and its staff is prepared to anticipate your every need. From the moment you arrive, you will appreciate the serenity and beauty of Williamsburg, while many exciting leisure activities wait nearby. Program Directors have expertly balanced the highly informative scientific sessions with ample leisure time to enjoy holiday activities in and around the hotel.

The physician program will focus on advances in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, with special emphasis on Mohs surgery and reconstruction, as well as important melanoma updates. Microscopes will be available for viewing numerous cases, with elaboration by the contributing Mohs surgeons and dermpaths. Panel discussions will allow the presentation of a variety of different technical perspectives, as well as audience participation.

The concurrent Mohs technician program is a natural adjunct to the basic training offered in our Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery course. The program will include updates on laboratory techniques and regulations, as well as discussions of more advanced techniques, technician-physician communication, and troubleshooting methodology. Attendees will have an opportunity for direct interaction with faculty throughout the program.

16th Annual Mohs Training Course - Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery

  • November 5-9, 2008

  • Concurrent Physician and Mohs Technician Sessions

  • Doubletree Hotel San Diego, Mission Valley

  • Hotel Web Site: www.doubletree.com

Course Description
The ASMS Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery course is a comprehensive introduction to the technical and practice management aspects of Mohs surgery, and is designed to provide dermatologists with basic skills and knowledge in the technique. The course includes intensive didactic and laboratory instruction, covering a broad range of topics applicable to the incorporation of Mohs surgery into a dermatology practice. Registrants should have a basic working knowledge of skin cancer dermatopathology and preferably one or more years of formal dermatopathology training. Physicians will review Mohs pathology from a library of over 500 cases under the supervision of experienced Mohs surgeons and dermatopathologists.

Technician instruction is an important component of the course, as Mohs surgery is highly dependent upon the quality of frozen section slides. Technicians will spend the majority of their instructional time in closely-supervised tissue cutting sessions, and also will participate in small group lectures and selected joint lectures with physicians. Our faculty and staff are highly committed to the ongoing quality of the program. It is their goal to ensure that the techniques covered are immediately applicable upon the technician's return to his or her own Mohs labs. Due to class size limitations, we are able to offer registration only to those technicians who register with their physician employers, unless technician is employed by a current ASMS member. Early registration is a must, as each course fills to capacity early in the year.

Exhibitor opportunities available for both meetings. For additional information, please contact: Novella Rodgers, Executive Director, 800-616-ASMS (2767) or execdir@mohssurgery.org
